一、《中国统计年鉴——1997》是一部全面反映中华人民共和国经济和社会发展情况的资料性年刊。本书收录了全国和各省、自治区、直辖市1996年经济和社会各方面大量的统计数据，以及历史重要年份和近十年的全国主要统计数据。 二、全书内容分为20个部分，即，1．行政区划和自然资源；2．综合；3．人口；4．从业人员和职工工资；5．固定资产投资；6．能源生产和消费；7．财政；8．物价指数；9．人民生活；10．城市概况；11．农业；12．工业；13．建筑业；14．运输和邮电；15．国内贸易；16．对外经济贸易和国际旅游；17．金融和保险；18．教育、科技和文化；19．体育、卫生、社会福利和其他；20．香港特别行政区主要社会经济指标。另附：台湾省、澳门地区主要社会经济指标；我国经济、社会统计指标同世界主要国家比较。简要说明主要包括本篇章的主要内容、资料来源、统计范围、统计方法以及历史的变动情况。各篇末附有《主要统计指标解释》。 三、书中所涉及的全国性统计数据，除行政区划、国土面积、森林资源和人口普查数据外，均未包括香港特别行政区和台湾省、澳门地区。 四、资料中所使用的度量衡单位均采用国际统一标准计量单位。 五、本年鉴的资料来源大部分来自年度统计报表，一部分来自抽样调查。台湾省和澳门地区统计资料分别来自各自编印的《统计月报》和《统计年鉴》。主要国家和地区统计资料来自联合国出版的有关统计资料。 六、本年鉴部分数据合计数或相对数由于单位取舍不同而产生的计算误差均未作机械调整。 七、本年鉴各表中，有关对全表的注解均在该表上方，对表中部分指标的注解则在该表下方。凡带续表的资料，对部分指标的注解一律在最后一张续表的下方。 八、本年鉴表中的符号使用说明：“…”表示数据不足本表最小单位数；“空格”表示该项统计指标数据不详或无该项数据；“#”表示其中的主要项；“*”或“①”表示本表下有注解；由于版面原因，部分计量单位100000000用10^8表示；10000用10^4表示。 Ⅰ. China Statistical Yearbook 1997 is an annual statistics publication, which covers very comprehensive data series in 1996 and some selected data series in historically impor-tant years and the most recent ten years at national level and local levels of province, au-tonomous region, and municipalities directly under the central government and therefore, reflects various aspects of China’s social and economic development. Ⅱ.The book contains the following twenty parts, 1. Division of Administrative Areas and Natural Resources; 2. General Survey; 3. Population; 4. Employment and Wages;5.Investment in Fixed Assets; 6. Production and Consumption of Energy; 7. Govern-ment Finance; 8. Price Indices; 9. People’s Livelihood; 10. General Survey of Cities;11.Agriculture; 12. Industry; 13. Construction; 14. Transportaion, Postal and Telecommunications Services; 15. Domestic Trade; 16. Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation and International Tourism; 17. Finance and Insurance; 18. Education, Science and Culture; 19. Sports, Public Health, Social Welfare and others; 20. Main Social and Economic Indicators of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In the appendices listed are Main Social and Economic Indicators of Taiwan province and the region of Macao; A Comparison of Economic and Social Indicators Among People’s Republic of China and Oth-er Countries. In brief introduction at the beginning of each part，mainly Coverage of this thapter, data sources, Statistical Coverages, Statistical methods and historical Changes are concerned. In addition, Explanatory Notes on Main Indicators are provided at the end of each part. Ⅲ.The national data in this book do not include that of Hong Kong Special admin-istrtive, and Taiwan province and the region Macao except for divisions of administrative areas territory, forest resources, and population census. Ⅳ.The units of measurement used in this book are internationally standard measure-ment units. Ⅴ. The major data sources of this publication are obtained from annual statistical re-ports, and some from sample surveys. Data of Taiwan and the regions of Macao are col-lected from Monthly Statistics Bulletin and Statistical Yesrbook compiled by Taiwan and Macao respectively. Data for major countries and territories are collected from various sta-tistical publications published by the United Naitions. Ⅵ.Statistical discrepancies due to rounding are not adjusted in this book. Ⅶ.The notes concerning the whole table are placed at the upper part of the table, while the notes concerning individual indicators are placed at the lower part. If the table is a continued one, the footnotes are placed in the last page. Ⅷ.Notations used in this book： “…”indicates that the figure is not large enough to be measured with the smallest u-nit in the table, “（blant)” indicates that the data not available. “#” indicates the major items of the total,“* or ①” indicated “see footnotes below”. When the unit is 100000000 we shorten some of them as 10^8. when the unit is 10000 tons or pesons, etc.，we shorten some of them as 10^4 so as to save the space for printing.
